Slimmer of the Year 2019 NOMINEE
Paul AverteWeight Loss: 75.2 kgConsultant: Maria AkriditisState/Territory: VIC
I’m a married father of 3 children and a Professional Engineer living in Melbourne. I've always struggled with weight and obesity. Recently, after turning 40, I've been suffering more with lower back issues, sleep apnoea, an endless reluctance to do anything active with my family due to an overwhelming exhaustion and increasing back pain, which I realise now, was leading to depression. In the past I’ve tried many half-hearted unsuccessful weight loss attempts, 2 serious efforts ... all failed. When I was 28, I decided I didn’t want to hit 30, as a smoker and obese, so I commenced a gruelling schedule of exercise and low calorie dinners. Although this was somewhat successful, the success was very short lived, I quickly gained weight. Then after successfully giving up smoking at 36, I continued to gain weight excessively as a non-smoker. Unfortunately when I was 40, I was diagnosed with cancer of the salivary gland, which required surgery and 6 weeks radiation to eradicate. Again after completing the radiation, I continued to gain weight, probably as some form of coping mechanism. Although I should have been happy that I’d made it through the cancer successfully, I guess I began to lose motivation due to the weight I’d gained and just continued to make bad choices and over eat. Then at 41, I made my second big attempt to lose weigh again with the same gruelling exercise, sometimes skipping meals altogether. Although losing some weight I quickly gained it all back. Going to events with my family became exhausting, going to my children’s sporting events was increasingly embarrassing and painful, travelling for work or leisure on aeroplanes became excruciatingly difficult and uncomfortable. Basically all activities, family or otherwise, were unpleasant. I also began to worry about my future particularly regarding my kids growing up, worried that I wouldn’t see my kids finish Uni, get married or have kids themselves. So after my wife recommended it and I saw real positive weight loss results in her with Cambridge Weight Plan, this sparked a new motivation in me to try again, particularly approaching 50. Thankfully, I met my Cambridge consultant Maria, who was a major support “pillar” for me. The weekly weigh ins gave me that accountability & extra motivation which kept me focused. My Cambridge consultant helped me change the way I approach nutrition which was missing in the past. After 8½ months I managed to lose 75.2kg, so reaching my goal weight was an amazing feeling but more than that, all of my health issues have disappeared. No more sore back, no more sleep apnoea or snoring, no more exhaustion and no more embarrassment. Cambridge Weight Plan was and is a life saver for me for 3 main reasons. Firstly it is easy, no more gruelling exercise programs. The great quality, variety and taste of the meals also made the journey easy and enjoyable; I look forward to choosing a different type of product each time. Secondly it enabled me to take back control of my health and remove all my health ailments and thirdly facilitated a massive increase in motivation for life and living. My energy levels are vastly increased and all activities in my life are now enjoyable, family or otherwise, thank goodness for Cambridge Weight Plan!

Erica Maggs loss 70kg using the Cambridge Weight Plan

Sharing by Erica Maggs

Image may contain: 5 people, people smiling, people standing and outdoor

This is me and yes I really did lose 11 stones on the One 2 One Diet by Cambridge Weight Plan. I went through highs and lows, blood sweat and tears to get to where I am today and I’ve worked for it! I know that my photos look unbelievable and some people think they are fake but I lived through this journey.

I had loose skin on my tummy, luckily very minimal down to exercising & running that was removed last year. My boobs were lifted because no end of exercise was going to make a difference there. I believed I was worth it and I’d worked hard for 12 months. I still have bingo wings and loose skin on my thighs but I continually work towards my body & fitness goals.

There will always be haters & doubters but this is me, I changed my life around for the better and now I help others who need support 🙂

Iraklis (Hercules) Giannakopoulos lost 100kg

Greece_Video from Cambridge Weight Plan on Vimeo.

I am 36 years old and for many years I weighed 197 kilos. My friends and family have always encouraged me to do something about it. I work as a DJ, surrounded by hundreds of people – it can be quite an uncomfortable situation for me with people staring and looking at me weirdly.
I was always lucky enough not to have any health implications but still my doctor always suggested, “Iraklis, you should lose weight even if you are not on any medication, obesity is a health problem. Prevention saves lives... We are not young forever. We are getting old and our body will not react the same in the future”. My life started to become more difficult because of my weight. I didn’t recognise myself, I was not able to walk, breathe normally and it was difficult for me to sleep. I could not even tie my shoelaces.
My friend, Sakis, actually persuaded me to start Cambridge Weight Plan, he showed me a couple of photos of previous clients. I became the mythical Hercules and began my journey. I passed one by one all the feats from the Nemea lion to the Diomedes’ mares. There was no regret but only gratitude for my progress.
I used to eat huge amounts of junk food at inappropriate hours. Once I started CWP, I enjoyed the wonderful tastes of the products, I was happy and it even covered my need for sweets. Several times, I felt I wanted to eat out of emotion, I had people telling me I wouldn’t reach my goal and I was scared of failing!
Each day that went by, I didn’t cheat, I wasn’t pessimistic and I gradually started to notice the changes. I started to become more active and finally enjoying life. The victory of winning the Slimmer of the Year 2017 award in Greece was a battle that I won. People saw my fight, believed in me even when they saw me with 100 kilos extra on my shoulders. I thank you all.
My family and friends have shown how proud they are too. My social life has changed forever, my self-esteem has improved. I will always thank my Consultant Despoina Varkari for her unstoppable support in our weekly sessions.
She has empowered me to become the captain of my diet to avoid food temptations. My final message is ‘’Thank you Cambridge Weight Plan because I love life and I want to live it!’’

Man of the Year 2016/17

In 1986, I suffered a serious back injury which gradually got worse and in 1996 I suffered serious degradation of my spine discs, forcing me to have to retire. Immobility followed 8 months bedridden, and my weight increased dramatically.
My wife Maria died suddenly at the age of 49 and my weight went up even more. The delayed shock of Maria’s death took effect, and I was soon on anti-depressants together with increasing amounts of painkillers and whisky I used to numb the growing pain.
I was diagnosed with high blood pressure; serious sleep apnoea; and arthritis in my knees. However my weight gain continued.
By late 2014, I was unable to walk so I had to use wheelchairs to move about.  I used a full face mask and CPAP (Continuous Pressure Air Pump) every night to ensure I kept breathing. I was unable to go about normal daily activities that we all take for granted, such as walking, shopping, socialising and playing sports.  Whilst I could still drive, I couldn’t get into my car.  I ended up buying a bigger car which quickly also became too small for me, so had to change it again to an even bigger one to enable me to get in and out safely.
Going out and buying clothes was no longer an option, so I had to locate a specialised retailer online in order to buy my 6XL size clothes. I now weighed 168kilos (26.5 stone).  Socialising had long since stopped and any excuse was used to avoid it. A new disabled badge allowed me to use larger parking spaces and get near to places I visited – although normally I’d just sit in the car to avoid the logistical nightmare of getting out and back in again.
At the beginning of 2015, I was referred to a knee surgeon who told me that I had lost 2” in height as that my knees had lost all the cartilage due to my weight. This was causing the excessive pain and could only be resolved with both knees being replaced by artificial ones. The senior anaesthetist told me that I was far too heavy to undergo surgery under general anaesthetic and would only be eligible if I lost weight.
I knew now that I had to do something.
I had heard of Cambridge Weight Plan years ago, so went online and entered my details to ask for a Consultant to contact me. I started on plan in June 2015 and the early days saw some incredible weight loss which encouraged me to keep going.
As I lost the weight, my activity increased! I was able to walk again without the aid of a wheelchair.  Cambridge Weight Plan has opened up a whole new life for me - walking, shopping, socialising and enjoying life again. I am able to buy clothes from high street shops. I can enjoy my family, my grandchildren and play the sports I love.
My friends and family are amazed. It’s the most wonderful feeling.

Grace Mecklenburgh lost 79.8kg

Woman of the Year 2016/17

My day would consist of eating fast food 3 times a day, every day, with snacks in-between. I felt depressed and stuck in a hole with no way out. The only thing that would make me feel 'somewhat better' was ordering myself the biggest meal I could from a local takeaway and eating myself out of the pain I was going through inside.
I used to suffer from severe pains in my chest and even my joints and back were in constant agony, so I rarely left the house. My family, friends and doctor were all concerned, and my doctor said to me, “Grace, if you don’t make a change then you will die from the consequences of being overweight!
But for such a long time I was in denial and kept putting the warning signs to the back of my mind, hoping that with another bite of my “greasy doner kebab and cheesy chips” that I'd forget how much pain I was in emotionally and physically.
One day I woke up and it hit me like a ton of bricks. What was I doing with my life, let alone my health? I had spent so long feeding my emotions that I was digging myself a grave with my own knife and fork. I said to myself, ‘Grace, it's now or never, this is enough. Stop feeling sorry for yourself and for once in your life, look after YOU and be the person you've always wanted to be!’
The first day of meeting my Consultant was the most nerve-racking thing in the world. I remember tipping the scales at a whopping 23st 10lbs and feeling so much hate, anger and upset towards myself.
Following the plan was so easy, it couldn't have been any more straightforward. Before I knew it my first weigh in came along 1 week later. I stepped on the scales and I couldn't believe it, I had lost an incredible 19lbs! I was ecstatic.
As each week passed, the days went by quicker. I continued to lose weight each week and every time I would notice differences. Whether it was my clothing feeling loose or the pain in my joints getting a lot more bearable, it was so motivating to see constant changes.
Having a focus with CWP has kept me feeling alive, reminded me how precious life is and how every single day should count towards my future. I love looking in the mirror now and shopping for new clothes, whereas before it was embarrassing and more of a chore.
The pains I used to feel in my joints, back and chest have completely disappeared. I have never felt so alive, energised, confident and empowered.
Early on I started recording my journey on Instagram and the encouragement from followers boosted my confidence, but I had no idea that I would be inspiring so many other people with my weight-loss journey. I now have over 7000 followers on “graciemariesjourney” and I’m really proud that I have just been accredited as a CWP Consultant.
Once you find your 'why' inside of you, keep that with you every step of the way and it will help you reach your goals. Dream, Believe, Achieve!

Ali Kabbani lost 89kg

My childhood was filled with lots and lots of food. I was always the ‘cutie pie’ of my family as I had chubby cheeks. My friends would be active and enjoy sports but I would prefer to watch and eat snacks. My family encouraged my eating and it was easy to gain weight.

As I grew older, I realised that being ‘cute’ and overweight was not helping me at all. I was ashamed of my body, always tired and became anti-social to avoid people making fun of me. I knew I had to do something.

I tried to start exercising and resolved to run for 30 minutes every day but for me even walking for 5 minutes was a huge effort. I started to lose hope that I’d ever be able to lose weight.

I told my mother that I was so desperate that I was considering surgery. To my surprise, she was not supportive of the idea. She was normally always behind me in my decisions but she suggested I try Cambridge Weight Plan instead.

I was nervous before my first appointment, thinking that people may make fun of me. But my Consultant explained everything and reassured me that if I stuck to the Plan then I would see the results I wanted.

I was pleasantly surprised at how much I was allowed to eat and the products tasted great. Within one week I had lost 4kg and was feeling great. With the support of my Consultant, I managed to lose 89kg in one year.

Now, I am able to do things which were impossible before, like playing sports and being more active and social. Most importantly, I’m not ashamed of myself anymore!

Thank you Cambridge Weight Plan for helping me to change my life!

Sybrand Styen from Ireland lost 92kg

In 2011, I lost my son in an accident and in the same year, my granddaughter passed away, aged just 1 year and 3 months. I was absolutely devastated and it almost killed me. I experienced too much stress and sadness and developed depression.

I also developed heart problems because of the stress and was confined to a wheelchair for almost two years. My body started to retain a lot of water and I put on weight. I visited lots of doctors and they struggled to explain my weight gain. Eventually, I found a doctor in South Africa who discovered my heart problem. Thankfully I got the medical attention I needed and got my heart problems under control. If I’d left it for one more week I would have been dead.

By this time I weighed 186kg. Every time I tried to lose weight, I failed and I was very discouraged by it. In February 2015 I returned to Ireland. I tried to lose weight with tablets and products from the pharmacy and health shops but nothing worked for me.

In October 2016 I heard of Cambridge Weight Plan from my friend. Weighing 164kg, I thought I would give it one more go.

I had my first appointment with my Consultant, Joanna. She gave me so much motivation to lose weight and to change my life. I started on Plan and could immediately feel it working. I had more energy and could see the weight disappear. I couldn’t wait for my weigh-ins every weekend to see how much I’d lost. Joanna prepared meals for me and taught me how to eat healthily.

I’ve lost a total of 92kg so far. I’m half the man I used to be and I feel 20 years younger.

With my new found confidence I decided to look up my first girlfriend Linda. She was the love of my life when we were 14 and I’d never forgotten her. We got back in touch and I’m delighted to say that I asked Linda to marry me and she said YES!

Thank you so much to Joanna and to Cambridge Weight Plan for giving me back my life and a wonderful future to look forward to.
